Holiday Previews for the Week

October 11 - It's My Party Day - How did you know????? ofcourse, everyday IS MY party day (...and I'll cry if I want to...). In any case EVERYDAY truley is a reason to celebrate and we might as well have a party every so often, because - well, it's fun (especially if you can get someone else to organize it for you!!

October 11 - Take Your Teddy Bear to Work Day - this one is kinda creepy. I would not be too sure about an individual that shows up to work with teddy bear in tow, now take it in your car and buckle it in - yeah, I could deal with that. But make sure you put on his dress clothes (funny how I think of all teddy bears as being boys).

October 12 - Columbus Day - YAY! The tourists are in town and there are festivities everywhere: I Love it!! and thank goodness for Chris, if it wasn't for his stubborness our world would be a LOT different today. Some simple knows:
Columbus Discovered America in 1492. He originally set sail on August 3, 1492, but had trouble with the ships, stopping at the Canary Islands for a month. The ships left the Canary Islands on September 3,1492.
He travelled with three ships: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria
While Columbus was an Italian, he could not find funding in Italy, so he turned to the King of Spain. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella provided the funding.
He did not land on the U.S. mainland. He landed on an island in the Caribbean. While many believe he landed on San Salvador, there is still debate on which island he originally landed on.

October 12 - Cookbook Launch Day - Go ahead - start your own! You know you've thought about it: a place to put all of your favorite recipes, maybe a book you would like to think would be passed on through the generations. How about a book that you pass through your existing family and have everyone put their favorite recipe in? The possiblilities are endless!!

October 12 - Old Farmer's Day - ee I ee I oh! Old Farmers Day honors the hard labor of farmers throughout American history. Early American culture was heavily a farming culture. Early settlers cleared fields and pristine woods, to farm the rich land. They brought seeds and farming methods with them. They found new seeds, and learned new methods along the way. Many of those new farming methods came from Native Americans, who were already farming the land.

October 12 - Moment of Frustration Day - I have had many of those recently, nice to know I can be official today.

October 13 - International Skeptics Day - (which is generally the first Friday 13th of the year) - because maybe this is all just a chess game that higher being are playing with our lives.....

October 14 - Be Bald and Free Day - no bald jokes today, it's all about the shiny dome and the bearer of said. Be free bald ones and be proud.

October 14 - Emergency Nurses Day - Emergency Nurses Day recognizes an important care giver. According to the Emergency Nurse's Association "Emergency Nurses Day salutes the dedication and commitment of emergency nursing professionals, who bring care, comfort, and compassion to patients......."

October 14 - National Dessert Day - .........say no more

October 15 - White Cane Safety Day - White Cane Safety Day celebrates and recognizes the achievements of the blind and visually impaired, and their independence. That independence is represented by the white cane that they use to travel from place to place. On October 15, 1964, a Joint resolution of Congress passed legislation marking this day. President Lyndon Johnson immediately issued a proclamation declaring this day to be White Cane Safety Day. This is an annual proclamation.

October 16 - Bosses Day - The origin of Bosses Day dates back to 1958. Paticia Bays Haroski, an employee at State Farm Insurance Company in Illinois, registered it with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Haroski chose the date because it was her father's birthday. Who was her boss? ....her father.

October 16 - Dictionary Day - Do you know that kids today do NOT KNOW HOW TO USE A DICTIONARY!!!!!!!!!! It really bothers me to no end, I work with kids a lot and I will bring out my handy dictionary and tell them (as my father told me) look it up! and they will sit there are stare at the book like it is poisonous. UUUUGGGGGGGGGH! REALLY????? what is going on here?? Do they not have these things in school anymore?? and what's with the Dictionary people just changing the spelling of certain words so that the words are more modern? why don't they tell us these things? I can do spell check and be told a word is wrong - um, excuse me but I have been spelling that word that way all my life and NOW IT IS WRONG?? .....ok, I will stop ranting......
Dictionary Day is in honor of Noah Webster, considered the Father of the American Dictionary. Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758.

October 17 - Sweetest Day Third Saturday of month -
Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio philanthropist and candy company employee started Sweetest Day. He wanted to bring happiness to orphans, shut-ins and under-privileged. His intent was to show these people that they were not forgotten. In 1922, he started this holiday by giving candy and small gifts. He often used movie stars to distribute the gifts. How sweet is that? Let's all TRY to be sweet today (and if you happen to have some sweets too, well then: life is good

October 17 - Wear Something Gaudy Day - Whhaaaa? you mean I can't do this every other day of the year? HA! we all need a little gaudyness in our life!!
funny too: The roots of this day go back to the hit 1970's television comedy show "Three's Company". Larry Dallas (played by Richard Kline), one of the characters on the show, declared a Wear Something Gaudy Day.
